Louisiana Online Teaching Professional Development Standards

With the passage of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, the federal government requires highly qualified teachers in every classroom. State certification in Louisiana includes a set amount of professional development credits. Educators wishing to teach online classes must also follow these guidelines.
  • Level 1 Certification

    • New teachers who have completed at least a bachelor's degree receive a Type C, or Level 1, teaching certificate. The Louisiana State Board of Education analyzes college transcripts for necessary courses. The college dean must also recommend the applicant for certification. The teacher must complete all required testing and background checks. Renewal for this type of certificate is usually not available.

    Level 2 Certification

    • Educators with a Level 1 certificate and three years of teaching experience may upgrade to a Level 2 certification after passing the Louisiana Teacher's Assistance and Assessment Program. To renew a Level 2 license, the teacher must complete 150 continuing learning units over five years.

    Level 3 Certification

    • Teachers may apply for a Level 3 license after teaching five years and finishing a master's degree program. They must also pass the Louisiana Teacher's Assistance and Assessment Program. An educator must complete 150 continuing learning units over five years to renew this license as well.
