Lowe's Decorating Ideas

  • Trash to Treasure

    • You can breathe new life into an old item or a yard-sale find quickly with paint. To renovate a table, for example, sand and clean the surface and then prime and paint the item following the paint manufacturer's instructions.

Take a project one step further by grouting the table and adding colored tiles or mirrors for a different look and extra durability. The power of paint can work wonders on any number of projects, from cabinet knobs to vases to old picture frames. Take inventory of the items you own that just don't feel like "you" or hit the garage sales. From there, let your imagination guide you with the help of sandpaper, paint, spray paint and tiles.

    Saving Space

    • Children often have the smallest bedrooms in the house. However, with many siblings sharing rooms, they need all the space they can get. Bunk beds remain a classic way to save space. Designs have advanced over the years and you can now install bunk beds that feature an entire wall of shelving for toys -- saving valuable space.

Save even more space by adding shelves and cubbies throughout the room for storage and by ditching space-hogs such as easels in favor of wall-mounted art centers. In addition to saving space, clean-up becomes easier when every item has a home. These same ideas can work throughout the home.

    A Fresh Focus

    • Upgrading a focal point can change the look of an entire space and such upgrades can cost less than you'd imagine. For example, you can change the look of your hearth -- and thus your entire room -- by painting over dark brick, adding an attractive fireplace screen and finding the perfect accent painting. You can also draw attention by adding a wooden mantle around the perimeter of a hearth or painting existing shelving. If you're interested in a larger project, you can make even bigger changes, such as adding a stone façade over existing brick. Apply ideas about the hearth throughout the house. Look for areas that you think could use a fresh coat of paint, a new accessory, more shelving or a completely different look.
