Methods for Stains on Carpet

    • Few things can ruin the clean, cozy feeling of a home as quickly as a dingy, stained carpet. Quickly blotting up spills is the best way to prevent set-in stains and keep carpet fresher for longer. For those spills that went unnoticed or lost out to more exciting plans, it is crucial to clean according to the type of carpet with specialized, gentle cleansers or professional assistance as necessary.

    Blotting

    • Quickly blotting stains with a white cloth, to prevent color bleeding onto the carpet and adding a new stain, is the first step to cleaning most types of carpet. While still wet, soaking up as much color and moisture as possible, as soon as possible, prevents the stain from spreading and soaking though the carpet to the backing. After soaking up the initial spill, misting warm water on the spill and repeating the blotting process can help to pull up color from deeper in the carpet fibers. Make sure the spill is dry to keep mold and fungus from setting into the backing. For plant-based carpets, it can be helpful to use a fan or hair dryer to make sure the area is dry.

    Spot Cleaning Spills

    • For darker stains, or stains not as easily removed with blotting and water, using a homemade gentle cleanser can remove colors, sugars and odors without stripping carpeting of its protective coating. A mixture of clear dish-washing liquid and water can lift stains when the stain is saturated with the cleanser and blotted, as described previously.

    Deep Cleaning

    • While not necessary after each spill, deep cleaning annually or biannually can restore freshness. If your carpet is synthetic, you can deep clean wall-to-wall carpeting with steam cleaning. Commercial rental steam cleaners are the best choice, as they remove more water. Be sure to vacuum the area first and follow the instructions specific to the rental machine. If area rugs, wool or plant carpeting need to be deep cleaned, it's best to leave it to the professionals.

    Enzyme Cleanser

    • When Fido has an accident on carpet, it's best to use an enzyme cleanser after blotting up moisture. Pet stains can permanently change the coloring of carpet, not to mention leave an unpleasant odor. Using an enzyme cleanser will break down odors and stains, specific to pet stains, and keep Fido from returning to your carpet as his own personal restroom.
