Modern Mediterranean Architecture

Modern Mediterranean architecture is considered, but not restricted to, modern architecture found in Spain, Italy and France. Though styles and layout vary, many of the buildings are constructed to take advantage of the sun and warm weather of the region.
  • Origins

    • Modern Mediterranean architecture has its origins in the rich history of European design and grandiose vision. Period styles from the past has been borrowed from to form a fusion of Italian, French and Spanish design. Both interior and exterior design are adapted to modern architectural ideals but hold on to the arcane beauty of arches and columns of the past.

    Roof Design

    • The roof of a building designed in the modern Mediterranean motif is seen as one that is low pitched and is roofed with terra cotta colored roof tiles. The same tiles cover ancient buildings of Venice and Pisa. The eaves are extended past the wall boundaries to provide shade in the hot Mediterranean sun.

    Courtyards

    • The floor plans of modern Mediterranean architecture are open styled that allow the room to enhance the interior design as well as to let in the sun. Courtyards are popular with flagged stoned walkways and fountains. The Mediterranean tradition of family dining outside is revised with open air seating and plenty of shade.
