Navigation System Features

Before a GPS navigation system, many would pinpoint the directions to a location via a traditional paper map. Since the introduction of the GPS navigation system, it is difficult to get lost, because the system can receive updates to the latest maps across the country. Every portable navigation system comes equipped with pre-loaded maps and automatic rerouting when you pass a street. However, there are other features to consider when comparing models.

    Screen Size

    • Navigation systems have an array of screen sizes, from 2.5 to 7 inches. The smaller systems may be hard on your eyes, and the touch-screen buttons make it difficult to enter your desired location. Sometimes the larger devices block your view while driving when mounted to your windshield and might become a nuisance to carry. A middle-sized navigation system with a 3.5- or 4.3-inch screen is a readable and useful device.

    Bluetooth Compatibility

    • A navigation system that works with a Bluetooth-compatible phone allows you the ability to make and accept telephone calls through the product's internal microphone, speakers and screen. The device displays contact numbers and the caller's caller-ID information on the screen. When you place or receive a call, the device mutes the directions.

    Foreign Language

    • Besides English, many GPS navigation devices can speak and show the directions in Spanish and French. Some offer additional languages, including English UK, Japanese and Italian. Check the manufacturer's website for additional language options, including those available for download.

    MP3 Player

    • Some GPS navigation units have the ability to work as a compact music device apart from the vehicle. The unit saves audio files and can play them through the automobile stereo with an FM transmitter or via the device's speakers.
