Zip Tools for Win98

  The ZIP file archive is almost as old as Windows. Since storage space was more restricted in the past, compressing files was the best way to save space. Utilities for archiving files exist for almost every operating system, and Windows 98 is no exception. Several tools are available to extract ZIP and other file formats.

7zip

• 7zip is a free file-compression and archive utility that can open several file formats. As open-source software, it can be downloaded for free. 7zip runs on Windows 98 and higher.

WinZip

• WinZip is a simple graphical program that predates Windows 98, especially for working with ZIP files. Because it is shareware, WinZip is not free but comes with a trial period so you can test the software before you decide to buy it.

PKZIP

• PKZIP is a ZIP utility that predates Windows. Although current versions are supported only on Windows 2000 and higher, you can still download older versions that work under Windows 98. PKZIP is commercial software but an evaluation version is available.

WinRAR

• WinRAR was designed to work with the RAR compression format and also supports working with ZIP files. You can download a trial version from the WinRAR website. Thirty-two and 64-bit versions of WinRAR are available for all versions of Windows.
