Nursing opportunities within the Coast Guard are small compared with other military branches. The Coast Guard Corps is arranged like the Navy and Air Force. Trained nurses -- whether they have experience or not -- can become officers and serve as nurses on board a ship and throughout the United States. The Coast Guard does not actively recruit nurses.

An enlisted person in the Coast Guard can become a health services technician. A health services technician receives 19 weeks of training. He is typically first assigned to a large medical clinic that is highly supervised. Afterward he may be assigned to a Coast Guard crew to care for the crew members. He may also be involved in search and rescue missions, providing medical care for those who are rescued.

For those who have already completed their education as a nurse, the Coast Guard has a small number of openings for nurses as commissioned officers. They earn the same ranks as Navy officers, starting with ensign and working up to fleet admiral.
Health Care Administrator
-
People with a four-year degree in nursing administration or health care can qualify to be a Coast Guard health care administrator. Administrators manage military hospitals and clinics.
Registered Nurse
-
The Coast Guard has opportunities for registered nurses who have graduated from an accredited nursing program and who possess a nursing license. People with these qualifications can serve as nurses in a number of different specialties including clinical nurse, community health nurse, medical-surgical nurse, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, operating room nurse, pediatric nurse or mental health nurse.
