Oil Tanning Tutorial

Tanning oil can accelerate the rate at which your skin develops a tan, when used correctly. The oil makes your skin more sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet rays, absorbing more sunlight and developing a brown color. Tanning oil is best used during the peak hours of the sun's rays. When using tanning oil, you should limit your daily exposure to the sun. It is best to spend 15 to 20 minutes each day taking in the sun while wearing tanning oil, rather than to spend hours outside for a single day.

Read the instructions that come with your particular brand of tanning oil. Some tanning oils may have specific instructions that accompany them that will help you maximize the effectiveness of your oil.

Exfoliate your skin by applying a gentle, moisturizing soap to a loofah. Rub the loofah over the surface of your skin that you plan on tanning. Removing the dead skin from the surface will maximize the length of your suntan, allowing younger skin to take in the sun's rays. Do not scrub your skin too hard, or you may cause irritation. Exfoliating, which should be done approximately 30 minutes before you go outside and tan, will also allow your skin to more fully absorb the tanning oil.

Apply tanning oil to your skin, making sure to spread it evenly over the surface. If you do not apply it evenly, you may acquire a streaky or patchy tan.

Lay out in the sun for up to two hours each day. There is no need to stay out in the sun longer; this will only increase your risk of developing a skin ailment. Be sure to turn over frequently; this way, you can ensure that your entire body gets tan. You should flip over every 15 minutes.

Rinse off the excess tanning oil with some cool water after you are finished tanning. Make your rinse quick; if possible, refrain from showering for 24 hours after tanning. Soap can dry out your skin, causing it to peel off prematurely, losing your newfound color.

Apply a good moisturizer to your skin. Dry skin tends to flake, so you want to make sure your skin is always hydrated.
