Employment opportunities may increase for those who obtain certification from organizations such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.

    Responsibilities

    • Pathology technicians prepare specimens such as human tissues for laboratory testing. They may assist a pathologist in the examination of specimens. After evaluating specimens, pathology technicians are responsible for recording the results and keeping records of all laboratory testing.

    Salary

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects 14 percent growth for clinical laboratory workers between 2008 and 2018. Growth is expected due to technological advances and the development of new types of laboratory testing. In November 2010, Indeed.com listed a national average salary of $57,000 per year for pathology technicians.
