Products to Control Lawn Grubs

The best time to inspect your lawn for grubs is sunset in early June or July when they are the most active. They prefer feeding on lawns that are not irrigated, so keep your lawn well-watered.
  • Identification

    • A lawn grub is an immature beetle. Measuring 1 inch in length and shaped like the letter "C," grubs resemble white worms or caterpillars.

    Symptoms

    • Grubs feed on grass roots. If you notice irregularly shaped dead patches in the lawn, dig up the dead grass to check for grubs underneath.

    Solution

    • Use an insecticide to kill lawn grubs. Master gardeners with the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension recommend diazinon or trichlorfon. They recommend that the insecticide be applied at the first sign of grubs to prevent a larger infestation.
