It's not out of the ordinary to find yourself with a drawer full of useless keys. After all, people move, have extra copies of keys made, lose keys and mistakenly bring home keys from hotels and other travel experiences. Luckily, there are a number of different ways in which extra keys can be used, if you're willing to get a little creative.
Jewelry
-
Depending on the size of keys that you have available to you, consider making some jewelry out of them. String a smaller-sized key onto a chain, and voila---you have a new necklace. You can use different types, sizes and lengths of chain to design a key necklace that is completely unique and fits your personal style preferences. If possible, try to clean the key you plan to use as best as possible before making your necklace so it doesn't dirty your clothes.
Wall Art
-
If you like the way some of your excess keys look, you can use them to create expensive-looking wall art. Simply mount the keys on a blank board or mat and put them in a shadow-box frame. You can arrange the keys however you like, and can use either multiple keys or a single key in each framed piece of art.
Wind Chime
-
If you have several old keys to use for your project, make a wind chime. To make a simple wind chime, punch holes around the rim of an aluminum pie tin. Thread thick yarn through each hole, tying a knot at the top so it can't fall through the hole, and tie a key at the bottom of each string. If you're a bit more industrious, you can design a variation of this basic wind chime model using more substantial materials like sheet metal.
