PVC piping systems are utilized all over the world in residential, commercial and industrial settings. It's used in plumbing and irrigation, drainage and sewerage, and as a travel line for compressed air and fluids. The versatility of PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, has to do with the material it's made of as well as the way it is manufactured.
Durability
-
PVC does not rust and corrode like metal piping, and it is resistant to substances such as drain-opening chemicals, solvents and even the different elements of human waste that can degrade softer plastics.
Ease of Use
-
PVC can be manufactured to whatever size and shape is needed. The material is more easily cut than metal piping, allowing large jobs to be completed more quickly, and the adaptability of the material to any situation, such as joining a PVC pipe onto an existing metal pipe, makes it easily integrated into any existing system.
Cost of Materials
-
According to the International Association of Pluming and Mechanical Engineers, PVC piping costs approximately 1/3 what cast iron pipes cost. The pipes are also readily replaceable should a pipe become damaged. This has made PVC one of the most efficient choice in materials for any piping project.
