Restrictions on Minnesota CDL Licenses

Minnesota issues three types of commercial driver's licenses, or CDLs. The types of vehicle they may operate are restricted by the license class. The age at which drivers may apply for a commercial license also varies by license class.
  • License Classes

    • Class A license holders may drive vehicles towing units that weigh more than 10,000 pounds and any combination of vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds. Class B license holders are restricted to a single vehicle that weighs more than 26,000 pounds. Class C holders may drive vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds that transport hazardous materials or passengers.

    Age Restrictions

    • Applicants for Class A licenses must be at least 18 years old. Class B applicants must be at least 17. Class C applicants must be at least 18, except for drivers who will transport hazardous materials. They must be 21 in most cases.

    Other Restrictions

    • Drivers may be restricted to the type of vehicle they supply for the road test for a commercial license. If the vehicle doesn't have air brakes, drivers may not drive vehicles with them even though they pass the air brakes portion of the knowledge test. Some drivers also may be restricted to driving within Minnesota.
