Salt Marsh Hay Substitute

Salt-marsh hay is found in marshes on higher ground. It doesn't contain weed seeds and is fluffy. Therefore, it makes excellent mulch. It is also an essential part of the salt marsh ecological habitat because of its nutritional value.
  • Features

    • Salt-marsh hay makes excellent mulch for gardens and larger landscaping projects. Unfortunately, when it's harvested, it damages ecologically sensitive areas. Some companies have developed substitutes that are more environmentally friendly.

    Alternatives

    • Salt-marsh hay substitutes are made from wheat, oat or barley straw, and blended with hay. They are usually heat treated.

    Benefits

    • An attractive aspect of salt-marsh hay is that it is practically weed free. The better substitutes available for purchase are heat-treated because exposure to high temperatures renders them almost weed free as well.
