Science: What to Do If There Is a Fire in a Lab

Among the many things that could happen in a lab, fire is a major concern. With the right equipment and planning, though, fires can be taken care of efficiently.
  • Fighting the Fire

    • Fire extinguishers should be used on small fires in 10-30 second bursts from between 5 and 10 feet away.

    Evacuation

    • When fires are especially large or dangerous, evacuation from the lab may be necessary. When the fire breaks out it is important to first notify everyone nearby. Then, the closest exit that can be safely used should be taken until everyone is safely outside. Planning a fire escape route is a good preparatory maneuver.

    Preventative Measures

    • While knowing what to do in case of a fire is important, it is arguably more important to plan ahead to help prevent fires. Having at least two fire extinguishers in a lab is a start. Flammable liquids should be locked away safely, as well as canisters of compressed gas and any other flammable materials.
