Chevrolet based the Silverado SS upon the same GMT800 truck platform as the standard Silverado pickup truck. The SS is the performance variant and differentiates itself from its stablemates with its Vortec High-Output V-8 engine, sport-tuned suspension, a lower stance and various styling cues. The SS is the only pickup in Chevrolet's lineup to offer all-wheel drive, as opposed to the more conventional four-wheel drive.

The Silverado SS derives its power from a 6-liter, Vortec V-8. This naturally aspirated 16-valve OHV motor has a 4-inch bore, 3.62-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 10 to 1. This performance-tuned powerplant provides the SS pickup with 345 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 380 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The 2005 Silverado SS sits on a 143.5-inch wheelbase with a 65-inch front track and a rear track of 66 inches. The SS is only offered as an extended-cab model with a short bed giving it an overall length of 227.7 inches. The truck's body measures 78.5 inches in width and 73.9 inches in height with an 8-inch ground clearance. The rear-wheel drive model weighs 4,934 lb., while the all-wheel drive SS has a curb weight of 5,192 lb.

The 2005 Silverado SS is offered with Chevrolet's short bed, measuring 78.6 inches in length and 19.5 inches deep. This bed is 64.8 inches wide at its broadest point, while it measures 50 inches wide between the wheel wells.

The rear-wheel drive model of the Silverado SS tows up to 7,800 lb. and has a maximum payload capacity of 1,266 lb. The rear-wheel drive model has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 6,200 lb. When equipped with all-wheel drive Chevrolet's SS pickup provides a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 lb., payload capacity of 1,787 lb. and a GVWR of 6,400 lb.

The Chevrolet Silverado SS achieves 14 mpg in city driving and 16 mpg on the highway, regardless of whether it's equipped with two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Crash Test Data

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's frontal crash test resulted in a four-star rating for driver protection and a three-star rating for passenger protection. The Silverado SS earned a "marginal" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's frontal offset crash test.
