Substitute for Powered Sugar

Powdered sugar, also known as icing sugar, is a primary ingredient in frosting and edible decorations for desserts and cakes. Powdered sugar can be made at home in a blender, coffee grinder or using a mortar and pestle.
  • Granulated Sugar with Cornstarch

    • A replacement for powdered sugar can be made using two cheap and common ingredients: sugar and cornstarch. This is made by mixing 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 tsp. of corn starch in a blender to create 1 cup of substitute powdered sugar.

    Granulated Sugar Without Cornstarch

    • Granulated sugar minus the cornstarch, is an alternative substitute for powder sugar. This is an option to try if you have an allergy to cornstarch or if you prefer not to use it. Grind the granulated sugar in a blender or by using a mortar and pestle. Powdered sugar made in this way must be used immediately since it will clump when stored.

    Sugar-Free

    • Diabetics who are looking for a substitute to replace powdered sugar in recipes can make a version that is sugar-free. Combine 2 cups of nonfat dry milk powder, 2 cups of corn starch and 1 cup of an artificial sweetener such as aspartame or sucralose and blend until powdered.
