Tourmaline Vs. Titanium

Tourmaline and titanium are two vastly varying substances, generally differing from each other in both features and functions. They are each used for a large assortment of purposes, and at times their purposes may overlap.
  • Titanium Features

    • Titanium is a silvery-white metal known for being strong as well as lightweight. It is a chemical element, meaning that it cannot be broken down into other substances through a chemical reaction. Titanium's chemical formula is Ti. Sources of titanium include ilmenite (an oxide mineral that also contains iron) and rutile (a titanium dioxide).

    Tourmaline Features

    • Tourmaline is a glassy, hard substance that can be a range of colors. It is a borosilicate mineral with a chemical formula, meaning that it is a chemical compound. As a chemical compound, it can be broken down through chemical reactions.

    Function

    • Titanium is used in alloys in everything from aerospace industry products to braces. It is also used as a metal in jewelry.

      Tourmaline is used in electronics for such things as polariscopes (a jeweler's tool used for examining gems with polarized light) and transducers (for measuring hydrostatic pressure). Like titanium, tourmaline is used in jewelry, though as a gem.
