Training Time for a Chef

Training time varies considerably for a chef, depending upon the ultimate goal. For those looking to become the head of a five-star restaurant, the training process can go on for many years. For others, the process is somewhat less demanding.

Culinary School

• Culinary school is not required to become a chef, but many people attend one to speed up the training process. Culinary schools can range in length from several months to several years depending on the type of program. Certificate programs will be shorter, while full degree programs can take several years.

Getting a Job

• Most people looking to become a chef do not start out as one, whether they went to culinary school or not. Typically, a prospective chef must spend time working in a kitchen in another position learning, developing a reputation and making contacts within the industry.

Other Chef Positions

• For those not wanting or willing to spend time working their way up a traditional hotel or restaurant kitchen, becoming a personal chef or catering chef is another option. Starting a personal chef or catering business allows you to become the boss quickly, but it is still necessary that you have the experience and skills to attract clients.
