Fertilizer

Before you putting vegetable seeds into your garden, fertilizer should be applied to your soil. Till it into the soil to a depth of at least 3 or 4 inches.
Deep Planting

According to North Carolina Cooperative Extension, asparagus and potatoes require the deepest depth when planting. While most vegetables should be planted no deeper than 1 inch, asparagus should be planted at a depth of 6 inches and seed potatoes should be covered with 5 inches of soil.
Shallow Planting
-
Some vegetables require a planting depth of only 0.5 inch, or just the below the surface. These vegetables include beets, kale, eggplant and all types of pepper plants.
