Virtual Nonprofit Finance Jobs

    • Many non-profit organizations have a variable cash flow, meaning money is not always readily available to pay salaries and benefits for employees. Therefore, many non-profit agencies use virtual employees to assist with the running and day-to-day operations of the business. Virtual non-profit jobs include virtual assistants, writers and bloggers, social media experts, and grant writers.

    Virtual Assistant

    • Personal assistants provide such administrative duties as scheduling assistance and telecommunication needs. Most virtual assistants work as independent contractors, thereby saving the organizations thousands of dollars by not requiring benefits, paying into Social Security or a full salary. Being a virtual assistant to a non-profit agency will mean setting your own hours, working from home, and participating in conference calls and emails as the primary form of communication with the agency. Most virtual assistants have an associate's degree, or several years experience as a secretary or office manager.

    Writer or Blogger

    • Non-profit organizations need professional writers to assist them in getting their message out to the public. A non-profit agency's goal is to provide information to the public about what its does, how it does it and who its helps. Agencies often use blogs, newsletters and mailers to let the community know current news and events. Non-profit agencies may require their writers to have a background in journalism, English or non-profit management.

    Social Media Expert

    • Non-profit agencies are joining the social media market with many agencies starting their own Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter accounts. Management of these accounts can be done by anyone with a computer and a reliable DSL or broadband Internet connection. Some experience in the social media field, along with graphic design skills would be a good skill combination for a social media expert in the non-profit field.

    Grant Writing

    • Grant writing is a skill that can be hard to learn and which many non-profits are always on the look out for. Since non-profits often have variable streams of income, they are willing to pay a grant writer to work from home on a project-by-project basis. Most grant writers are freelance writers and will write proposals and grants for several agencies. The training to become a virtual grant writer usually comes from experience and training in marketing, public relations, fund raising or social services.
