Weird Gatorade Facts

Gatorade is a sports energy drink that replenishes the electrolytes the body sweats out during physical activity. As of November 2010, it comes in 19 different flavors and has undergone many product transformations since it was created in 1965, according to the Gatorade website.

Origins

• In 1965, the coach of the University of Florida football team went to his school's science lab and asked why his players were suffering from the heat and heat illnesses. The researches found the players were not replenishing their electrolytes and carbohydrates and concocted an energy drink for the team. They named it Gatorade, after the team: the Gators.

Football Tradition

• The "Gatorade Shower" is a popular tradition on the football field after a team wins. Players dump a large bucket of Gatorade over the coach in celebration. The first "Gatorade Shower" is credited to New York Giants' defensive tackle Jim Burt, who doused his coach in 1985, according to CNN.

Pop Culture

• Gatorade's logo is "Is it in you?" It has been popularized by the image of professional athletes sweating different colors of the drink. Some of the most famous athletes to sweat Gatorade are Michael Jordan, Peyton Manning and Serena Williams.
