When to Gather Turnips

Commonly grown in regions across the world, turnips are root vegetables that can be easily grown and stored for long periods at a time. Turnips have an unmistakable purple and white root bulb and a leafy green stalk. Harvesting turnips is best done after a mild frost has occurred.According to USA Gardener Guide, "For the main storage crop, plant turnips in late June or early July, so that roots can develop in the warmer weather," then harvest in the spring.
  • Harvesting

    • The harvesting of turnips must occur before the temperature outside reaches 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a light frost will improve the flavor of the turnip. Turnips are not intended to be harvested during months of warm weather.

    Storage

    • Turnips, like all root vegetables, are best stored in a cool place. According to The Essential Garden Guide, "Common storage is in a root cellar. Dig, cut off stem 2" to 3" above the roots and store covered with sawdust or other material in a cool (32 to 40 degrees) moist location. Turnips will keep in the refrigerator crisper drawer for several months." Freezing is also an option for storage.

    Preperation

    • Turnips are grown all over the world; therefore, they are used in many different cuisines. Because the meat of the vegetable is hard and tough, boiling is a common preparation. The greens that grow from the top of the turnip are also boiled, usually with smoked pork and served with spicy vinegar.
