Who Qualifies for Schedule M?

Schedule M is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax form launched for the 2009 income-tax year. Using the form, qualified taxpayers may file for the Making Work Pay and the Government Retiree tax credits. The tax credits allow a collective reduction of tax obligation or increase in refund of up to $1,300.
  • Making Work Pay Tax Credit

    • The maximum credit for qualifying taxpayers is up to 6.2 percent of earned income with a cap for individuals at $400. Married couples filing a joint return can receive up to $800. Individuals must earn $6,451 or more and couples must earn $12,903 or more.

Making Work Pay Tax Credit Exclusions

    • Excluded taxpayers include individuals with a modified adjusted gross income of $95,000 or more and joint filers earning $190,000 or more, dependents on another taxpayer's return, taxpayers without a Social Security number and non-resident aliens.

    Government Retiree Credit

    • Government retirees who did not qualify for economic recovery payments in 2009 can file schedule M to receive a credit of $250 for individuals and $500 for joint filers. Retired local, state and government employees who received pension payments in 2009 for work not covered by Social Security may also claim the credit.
