Usage
-
Pressing the "F8" key during the boot up of the machine will allow you to access the startup options menu. By using this hot key and selecting "Safe Mode," you may be able to log onto your PC in safe mode, which loads the operating system with a limited amount of services and drivers running, bypassing some software problems.
During the startup of safe mode, you are also given the option of loading the System Restore function which, if activated, allows you to recover the system configuration to an earlier point in time.
Options
-
There are more options available if you have the Windows XP installation CD. Start up the PC with the disk inserted and press the "R" key once the disk has loaded. This allows you to enter the recovery console, giving you text-based command line access to the computer.
Alternatively, you can allow setup to continue and select a repair installation, which reinstalls Windows over the top of the existing installation, usually repairing any problems with the operating system.
Warning
-
All of these options can potentially cause you to lose data if performed incorrectly. Ensure you read the detailed instructions Microsoft provides online and, if necessary, ask a trained IT technician to help you.
