From 1968 through 1976, the Ford Motor Company produced the Gran Torino for the North American market. Initially, the Torino was an upscale version of the Ford Fairlane. However, by 1970 the Fairlane became a sub-series of the Torino; in 1971 the name Fairlane was dropped completely and replaced by Torino, which came in six models that year: ranch wagon, sedan, hard top, squire, fast back and sports series.

The ranch wagon is a four-door, rear-wheel drive wagon with a three-speed transmission. Its powered by an in-line, six-cylinder engine, with 250-cubic inches of displacement. This motor generates 145-horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 232 foot-pounds of torque at 1,600 rpm. It has a 3.68-inch bore and a 3.91-inch stroke, with a compression ratio of 9.0:1.
The 1972 Torino hardtop, the squire and the sports series fastback are also two-door, rear-wheel drive vehicles, while the 1972 Torino sedan is a four door. All have the same three-speed transmissions and engine performance equal to that of the wagon. However, the fastback and the sports series are both powered by an eight-cylinder, V-8, overhead valve engine with a displacement of 302-cubic inches. These V8s generate 210 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 296 foot-pounds of torque at 2,600 rpm. Both have 4-inch bores, 3-inch strokes and a compression ratios of 9.0:1.
