In 2002, the company offered the Z3 Roadster for $31,300 to $45,990, depending on options and trim levels. One of the most expensive trims was the Z3 M, featuring many engineering and convenience improvements over the standard Z3, particularly when paired with the Sport Package option.
Engineering

The M Roadster's engineering improvements over the standard Z3 included a more powerful 3.2-liter I-6 engine with a bore and stroke of 3.43 inches by 3.58 inches and a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1. It also featured 24 valves and double overhead camshaft configuration. In contrast, standard 2002 Z3 Roadsters offered a 2.5-liter, 186 horsepower engine.
Performance

The Z3 M's engine achieves 315 horsepower at 7,400 rpm with a net torque of 251 pound-feet at 4,900 rpm. The car featured a five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. The M Roadster yielded modest fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on highways. The standard Z3 may have been less powerful, but it did have a better fuel efficiency, with 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
Sport Option

Beyond the M Roadster's powerful engineering, options packages improved upon its convenience features. The Sport Package could be added to any 2002 BMW Z3. It added aluminum gauges, heated seats, 17-inch sport wheels, wind jam and leather sport seats.
