Advice & Guidance for Job Vacancies

There are several ways you can seek out job vacancies. Local newspapers offer help wanted ads. Other methods include online job banks and asking friends or relatives about job openings where they work.

  • Resumes

    • Because many job vacancies may require a resume rather than a completed application, it's a good idea to always have several copies of your resume and cover letter with you when you're looking for work. This is especially beneficial if you plan to attend upcoming job fairs in your area.

    Research

    • When you look at a job vacancy, visit that company's website and read more about the company's products or services to customers. Also click on any vacant positions you might qualify for to get a detailed description of the job responsibilities for that position and familiarize yourself with the duties and prepare any questions you have should you be granted an interview.

    Skills

    • Because not every job vacancy will fit your qualifications or skills, it's important that you take a look at your skills and career interests before applying for open positions. For example, if you see a position for a pastry chef but you mainly have experience as a line cook, seek job openings that better match your experience.
