Are Refrigerant Gases a Hazardous Waste?

Refrigerant gases are considered a hazardous waste, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They contain hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which increase global warming and cause damage to the ozone layer.

Phase Out

• Countries that comply with the Montreal Protocol or the U.S. Clean Air Act will be following a scheduled phase out of refrigerant gases that contain HCFCs, according to website Refrigerant Tracker. Production and importation of some gases has already begun as of 2010. By 2014, there will be a complete ban on the use of HCFCs.

Recycling and Reclamation

• Existing equipment that require HCFC refrigerant gases will only be allowed to use recycled or reclaimed gases. Careful records must be kept to track usage and inventory of the gases, and leaks must be repaired within 30 days.

Equipment Using Refrigerant Gases

• Examples of equipment affected by the phase out include various industrial and commercial refrigeration systems, as well as central heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVACs). The legislation will be felt by many businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, retail shops and offices.
