Auto Inspection Requirements in Massachusetts

  • Vehicles

    • If you have an automobile that you have registered in the state, you must get it inspected every year. Some automobiles also have to go through an emissions test each year. If your car model is from 1996 or newer than that, it must undergo an emissions test. If your vehicle emits visible smoke, it will fail the safety inspection. If yours is a new car that is delivered to you in Massachusetts, it need not go through the emissions test.

    Frequency

    • Your vehicle must pass a safety inspection and an emissions test every year before the expiration of its safety inspection sticker. You should get this done by the end of the month on the sticker. If you buy an automobile, whether it is new or used, you need to get it inspected within seven days of registering it in order to drive it in the state.

    Scheduling

    • In order to get your car inspected, you will have to take it to one of the more than 1,000 inspection stations in the state. Stations conduct inspections during certain hours of the day. Massachusetts requires these stations to post their inspection hours. You may be able to schedule a time that is convenient for you. When you go to the inspection station, bring your vehicle registration and the required inspection fee of $29, as of 2010.
