The Best Tomato Varieties for Alkaline Soil

Tomatoes like a slightly acidic soil, according to the National Gardening Association, but there are some varieties that will tolerate or even thrive in a more alkaline soil. Check the pH level of your soil every few years. If it is too acidic (pH below 6), you can add lime to your soil. Alkaline soils are those with a pH above 7, and you can add sulfur to bring the pH level down. Because a more alkaline soil could encourage more disease growth, look for a disease-resistant variety of tomato.

    Champion

    • A sandwich tomato, the Champion is usually a high performer in a wide variety of soil types, including alkaline. It is resistant to Verticillium wilt, Fusarium wilt and tobacco mosaic.

    Better Boy

    • The Better Boy is an old standby that produces vigorous plants. Its popular tomatoes are firm and globe-shaped. They can grow up to one pound in weight. They are plentiful in production and mature in approximately 75 days.

    Juliet

    • A grape-sized tomato, the Juliet is an indeterminate variety resistant to blight and other diseases. Although sometimes described as bland when eaten straight off the vine, it sweetens up remarkably after a day or two.

    Roma

    • Roma tomatoes are paste and sauce tomatoes, perfect for canning but also good for eating. They are plum-shaped and often described as plum tomatoes. Romas are determinate, meaning they ripen all at one time rather than continually throughout the season. They are very resistant to disease and can often withstand a variety of harsher weather as well.
