BMW Z8 Performance Specs

    • The BMW Z8 is a convertible, two-door sports car with super car performance. The Z8 is based on the concept car, the BMW Z07 that debuted at the 1997 Tokyo car show. It was produced in such a small quantity that many car enthusiasts have not seen one on the street, but it is very popular with car clubs and events are often held just for this model.

    Production Information

    • The Z8 was first manufactured in 1998 and ceased production in 2003. The total run of cars produced was 5,703 with the peak of production reached in 2001 with 2,312 cars. The majority of cars were produced with the titanium silver exterior. The list price in U.S. dollars was $128,000 in 2000. All cars were produced as a convertible with a hard top and stand included in the purchase price. Changes made to the Z8s imported into the United States included, gauges in miles per hour, red tail lights, DOT approved headlights and a cup holder.

    Performance

    • The Z8 was powered with an aluminum V8 of 302 cubic inches. The engine produced 394 hp at 6,600 rpm and 368 foot-pounds of torque at 3,800 rpm. The only transmission available was a six-speed manual with gear ratios to allow a top speed of 155 mph. The zero to 60 times were in 4.3 seconds and 13.0 seconds in the quarter mile. These performance statistics were possible because of the total weight of the car being a light 3,725 lbs. Combine the power, weight and a drag coefficient of .43 and stunning performance is possible.

    Features

    • This vehicle uses a sophisticated suspension built using McPherson struts, roll bars and shocks to provide the driver with excellent handling. Vented disc brakes with anti-lock braking system to assist the driver with braking from high speeds and adverse conditions. The body is constructed entirely from aluminum to keep the car weight at a minimum. To protect the driver in the event of a crash, a three-point harnesses, roll bar hoops and air bags are standard.
