A fruit bulletin board can help students identify parts of the fruit. Kathy Collins/Stockbyte/Getty Images According to the Center for Disease Control's "Fruits and Veggies Matter" website, fruits contain vitamins and fiber that are necessary to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. To help students understand the benefits and science behind fruit and to get them interested in fruits of the world, plan a fruit-themed bulletin board.
Parts of a Fruit
-
In a science class, a bulletin board with fruit can illustrate basic concepts. Choose a recognizable fruit, like an apple or a pear, and make a large cross-section from colored paper. The different parts should be clearly visible: stem, seeds, skin, core, flesh and leaves. Make the board an interactive project by creating the labels and asking students to work together to point out where each label belongs. Use lines to connect the labels to the fruit's different parts.
Fruit Bowl
-
For a welcome back bulletin board, make a fruit bowl for the class. Start with a large paper cutout of a basket or a bowl. The container should be wide enough to cover most of the bulletin board. For each child, cut out the shape of a different fruit from paper and put their photo in the center. Use simple fruits like oranges, grapes and bananas for younger children. Work with more exotic fruits for older children, like papayas, mangoes and pineapples. Students can identify and research each piece during a unit where your class studies fruits. Make the bulletin board a class activity by asking each child to create a construction paper and crayon representation of their favorite fruit.
Healthy Eating
-
For a nutrition-focused unit, construct a bulletin board demonstrating the health benefits of fruits. Use a heading that states the recommended number of servings per day based on the average age and weight of your students. Adhere pictures of different kinds of fruit. Choose fruits that grow in your region, exotic fruits or fruits children may not recognize. Include facts about fruit, list different ways to eat fruit or information about how much fruit constitutes a single serving.
Fruits of the World
-
When your class studies different countries and cultures around the world, put together a bulletin board that exhibits fruits of the world. Use a world map as the centerpiece. Around the map arrange special fruits and connect them to their respective countries with a line. Focus on exotic fruits children are less likely to be familiar with like star fruit, durians or mangosteens. With each fruit, include a photo and an explanation of how it is eaten.
