Carob Range of Growth

Carob, the product of the bean pod of the carob tree, may have grown first in Greece and then spread to other areas aided by travelers of various nationalities. Carob thrives in a Mediterranean-type climate and is tolerant of drought conditions and poor soils. Carob will thrive in any area that oranges typically do.
  • Mediterranean Basin

    • The mild, subtropical Mediterranean basin is where carob mayo have originated. Carob is widely cultivated throughout the region, particularly in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Cyprus, islands of Malta, Spain, Portugal, and parts of southwestern Asia. Wild carob also grows in lower altitude regions and thrives along the coastal areas.

    Australia, South Africa and Chile

    • Carob grows freely throughout Australia, South Africa and Chile. Growers cultivate carob commercially along the coastal areas, where there is a moderate climate.

    California, Arizona and Mexico

    • Carob thrives in California, particularly on the southern coast near the Pacific ocean. The arid climate of Arizona and coastal areas of Mexico also are conducive to the growth of carob.
