Definition of Beadboard

Beadboard is a type of paneling normally used on the walls in bathrooms and kitchens. It is most commonly associated with cottage or country-style decor.
  • Description

    • A recessed strip, called a bead, runs up beaded paneling and characterizes beadboard compared to other types of panels.

    Features

    • Most beadboard panels come with tongue-and-groove construction, which allows for a seamless look once the paneling is installed. Beadboard helps protect walls, and can quickly transform a room, giving it a completely new look.

    Types

    • Beadboard is available in large sheets or in smaller pieces that are just a few inches wide. Beadboard is available in natural wood, pre-primed or in finishes such as cherry and maple.

    Materials

    • Manufacturers produce beadboard from plywood or medium-density fiberboard, or MDF.

    Tips

    • Although beadboard is normally seen with the lines going up and down, many Southern homes run the beadboard horizontally.

    Uses

    • Beadboard is normally applied to walls, but it also works well in decorative closets or as backing to shelves and cabinetry.
