Do You Need to Keep Your Landline in Order to Have DSL?

Traditionally, digital subscriber line (DSL) providers package Internet and phone services to make use of existing landlines, according to CNet. You do not, however, always need to keep an active landline to have DSL.
  • Naked DSL

    • DSL separated from voice service is called "naked DSL," according to the Consumerist. There is no difference between naked DSL and traditional DSL, other than you won't receive a dial tone on a telephone.

    Benefits

    • Naked DSL is often cheaper than bundled services because you do not have to pay for a phone service that you may not want or need.

    Tip

    • If you have the option of naked DSL, CNet suggests using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) instead of an analog phone line. VoIP transmits calls via your DSL line and usually costs less than traditional phone service and has more features.
