DVD Decoders Compatible for Windows Media

    • Although some versions of Windows come equipped with a DVD decoder, many Windows operating systems are unable to play back DVDs even if you have a DVD player installed. Although your manufacturer may have installed a DVD decoder, Windows Media Player will inform you that it is unable to play back the device until you have purchased a DVD decoder. Microsoft maintains a list of DVD decoders that it officially supports.

    CinePlayer DVD Decoder

    • The CinePlayer DVD Decoder is produced by Roxio for Windows XP and Windows Vista. It offers DVD navigation and playback. The decoder supports playback of DVD, MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital files and uses motion compensation and buffering to reduce choppiness in video playback.

    DVD XPack

    • DVD XPack is a DVD Decoder plugin released by Corel for Windows Media Player. It offers DirectX Video acceleration and high-definition video. The plugin supports the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. It was formerly known as Intervideo XPack.

    CyberLink Power DVD

    • CyberLink PowerDVD is available as both a standalone application for video playback and as a plugin for the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. It has MPEG-2 and Dolby audio support and offers the ability to navigate DVD menus in addition to having its DVD playback optimized for personal computers.
