The Yamaha PW50 is a small motocross dirt bike engineered specifically for children. To help make riding easier, it comes equipped with an automatic transmission that is mated to its 49cc engine. As the frame of the PW50 is relatively small, and as it is designed to be a lightweight dirt bike, its engine is sized proportionately and is relatively lightweight. Its engine has a purposely smooth power band, which makes it easier for younger riders to learn.
Engine Design
-
The PW50's 49cc engine is comprised of a single cylinder. It has a two-stroke operation, which is easier to handle for its intended younger riders. Also, most motocross bikes have two-stroke engines. It also features two reed valves, which are a type of valve that restricts fluid movement to a single direction, and opens and closes based on the pressure of the fluid.
Engine Specifications
-
The bore of the PW50's engine measures 40 mm, which is the diameter of the sole piston shift in the engine. Its stroke measures 39.2 mm, which is the distance that the piston can move up and down within the piston shaft. Fuel is delivered to the engine by a single VM12 injector. The engine's ignition system uses a CDI, or capacitor discharge ignition, design, which employs capacitor discharge to fire the engine's spark plug.
Drivetrain
-
The PW50 has a shaft-based drivetrain that delivers the engine's power to the dirt bike's rear wheel. The transmission is automatic and employs a wet centrifugal design, meaning it operates as one continuous gear. While centrifugal transmissions tend to carry more weight than manual gearboxes, Yamaha has intentionally included it in the PW50 as a way to help make it easier for children to use.
