The Fiat Bravo won European Car of the Year on its debut in 1995. Buena Vista Images/Photodisc/Getty Images The Fiat Bravo is a small sedan with two or four doors that was manufactured by Fiat from 1995 to 2001 and was brought back to the market in 2007. The Bravo replaced the earlier Fiat Tipo model, and was itself replaced by the Fiat Stilo. When it was first launched, it won European Car of the Year. The Bravo comes in a range of engines sizes, running on either gasoline or diesel fuel.
Base Gasoline Engine
-
The smallest engine to come in a Fiat Bravo is the base engine of 1242 cubic centimeters (volume refers to the volume inside the cylinders that is swept by the pistons) with four cylinders arranged in a line and five valves per cylinder. The valves are in a double overhead cam configuration, which means that the inlet and exhaust valves are controlled directly by a camshaft, instead of by a push-rod. The 1.2 has a horsepower of 82 hp -- a unit of power equal to 550 foot-pounds a second -- and a torque (turning force produced by the engine) of 83.3 foot-pounds. It has a top speed of 105.2 miles per hour and can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 12.5 seconds.
Larger Gasoline Engines
-
The car was also offered in 1.6 liter, 1.8 liter and 2.0 liter gasoline engines. The 2.0 engine has five cylinders as opposed to the regular four cylinders.
The 1.6 renders 103 horsepower (hp) and 106.2 ft.-lbs. of torque. The 1.6's top speed is 114.3 mph and it takes 10.8 seconds to get from zero to 62 mph.
The 1.8 produces 113 hp and 113.6 ft.-lbs. of torque. The 1.8's top speed is 119.9 mph and it goes from zero to 62 mph in 10.0 seconds.
The largest gasoline-engined Bravo, with 2.0 liters of displacement, produces 154 hp and 137.2 ft.-lbs. of torque. The two liter's top speed is 132.4 mph and it takes 8.0 seconds to get from zero to 62 mph.
Diesel Engine
-
The Bravo came with two different diesel engines during its lifetime, the TD and the JTD. The diesel engines both have 1910 cc of engine displacement and four inline cylinders, but the TD has electronic fuel injection and the JTD direct injection. The JTD is more powerful than the TD with 105 hp and 147.5 ft.-lbs. of torque, against the TD's 75 hp and 108.4 ft.-lbs. of torque.
The JTD is also much faster than the TD with a top speed of 116.2 mph, accelerating from zero to 62 mph in 10.4 seconds. The top speed of the TD is only 102.5 mph and it takes 15.1 seconds to get from zero to 62 mph.
Commonalities
-
Each Bravo comes with front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission. The rear brakes are drum brakes (expanding shoes inside the wheel) and the front brakes are discs ( a disc brake is a fixed metal disc that slows the wheel when pads are applied).
