Misconceptions

Contrary to popular belief, explorer Christopher Columbus did not prove to European thinkers that the world was round. Scientists and scholars in 15th century Europe were aware that the Earth was spherical in shape. Scientists doubted Columbus' calculations relating to the distance he was attempting to sail.
Variations
-
Perceptions of a flat Earth are prominent in the mythologies of several cultures, including mythologies of ancient India, China, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Some interpret Biblical verses as proof that the Bible promotes the idea of a flat Earth.
Time Frame
-
Evidence exists that the ancient Greeks as far back as the 6th century B.C. believed the Earth was in the shape of a sphere. Influenced by the findings of Greek philosophers and scientists, European as well as Islamic civilizations since that time accepted the idea of a round Earth.
