Florida Laws About an Address Change for My Driver License

    • Florida law makes it simple for state residents to change the address on their driver's license. For most state drivers, making the change does not even require going to a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) driver license office. However, certain classes of drivers must present identification at a driver license office. Knowing what requirements must be met makes changing your address straightforward.

    Time Frame

    • All Florida residents who move or change their address must request a new driver's license within 10 days. State residents should be sure to change their address as soon as possible. As of November 2010, the fee for receiving a license with a new address is $25.

    Class E License

    • All U.S. citizens who hold a class E Florida driver's license, issued to drivers of vehicles weighing less than 26,001 pounds, including most passenger vehicles, are able to change their address online, by mail or at a local DHSMV driver license office. License holders may complete a simple online form or print and mail a similar form, found on the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website, to the state's Bureau of Records. Residents must provide their full name, driver license number and current address and a new license will be mailed to the new address. U.S. citizens who choose to change their address at a driver license office must also provide proof of citizenship and identification, such as a passport or birth certificate.

    Non-citizens

    • Florida residents seeking to change their address on a driver's license who are not United States citizens must go to a DHSMV driver license office to have their address changed, regardless of their license type. Non-citizens must provide proof of legal presence, such as a green card or an immigration judge's order. The state's Gather, Go, Get website lists all proofs of legal presence that are accepted at the driver license office.

    Class A, B or C

    • All Florida residents holding a commercial driver's license, or a class A, B or C license, must apply for a change of address at a Florida DHSMV driver license office. Drivers must bring an acceptable form of identification to establish proof of citizenship, for United States citizens or legal presence, for non-citizens.
