Installation of a furnace means putting together a selection of disassembled parts according to the specifics outlined in the manufacturer's manual. All furnaces require certain elemental rules regarding proper operation that must be met when they are installed. In addition, installation of a furnace must conform to local building codes and safety regulations.
Central Location
-
The furnace will operate most efficiently if it is located as centrally as possible. A central location results in even distribution of the warm air though ducts. And a central location helps all rooms receive roughly the same level of warm air.
Extra Room at Base
-
Be sure to allow some room around the base of the furnace. This extra space facilitates the return of cold air through the pipes or ducts from the rooms. A quick return allows the air to rejoin the furnace directly.
Straight Smoke Pipe
-
The furnace needs to be placed in a position that allows the smoke pipe to the chimney to be as straight as possible. A straight smoke pipe allows for more efficient drafts and this increases the overall effectiveness of the furnace to heat the entire house.
Maintenance Room
-
Don't place the furnace in such a tightly constricted place that it obstructs your ability to clean it and perform maintenance. Make sure there is enough room to allow ease of entry for all furnace maintenance duties.
Equal Duct Capacity
-
Furnaces work through two sets of ducts. One duct sends warm air to the rooms, while the other duct sends cold air back to the furnace to be warmed so that it can be sent out again. The capacity of the cold air return pipes must equal the capacity of the warm air pipes for the furnace to work effectively.
Horizontal Pipe Pitch
-
A system of horizontal pipes carry the warm air through the duct system. In order for the air to move correctly, these horizontal pipes must have the correct angle of upward pitch. This angle should be at least 1 inch per lineal foot for each horizontal length of pipe.
Attic Drainage
-
If you must place your furnace in the attic, you need to take some steps to avoid moisture problems. Situate a secondary drain pan under the furnace unit. A plastic drain pan will help to prevent any damage caused by the air conditioner condensate drain being blocked. Keep in mind that it not advisable to install a condensing furnace in the attic if your winter temperatures regularly fall below freezing.
