Genetic Laboratory Testing

Genetic testing usually checks blood for indications of genetic abnormalities. Further testing is possible on other tissues. Doctors use these tests to screen for possible future diseases or to confirm a diagnosis.
  • Prenatal Testing

    • Genetic testing is the most common for unborn children. Expectant mothers undergo several genetic blood tests, which show possible genetic issues with the fetus. Pregnant women undergo these screens in the first or second trimester of pregnancy.

    Predicting Disease

    • Some blood tests check DNA for mutations or specific genes that cause disease. After speaking with a genetic counselor about the ramifications, adults or children may request these screens. Couples planning to conceive can first have tests to check for the possibility of passing down these genes to their offspring.

    Confirming a Diagnosis

    • Patients showing symptoms specific to a genetic disorder may undergo genetic tests that involve taking blood or tissue. A positive test indicates the gene is present. Presence of the gene does not mean the disease definitely will develop.
