Height of the Average American Man

Out of every hundred men in the United States, approximately two-thirds of them fall within 2 inches of the national height average of slightly less than 6 feet. This places roughly 64 million American men in this range.
  • Average Height

    • As of 2010, the average height for the adult American male is around 69.7 inches. This translates into roughly 5 foot 9 inches. If you wish to display it in the metric system, the figures show an average height of 177 cm.

    Considerations

    • These figures are assigned to white American men at their highest point. There may be slight differences given race or ethnicity. Black American men for example are on average about .8 cm taller than white men. Another factor is age as most adult males will lose some measure of height as they grow older.

    Fun Fact

    • Out of the 42 men who have been president of the United States, 19 were 6 feet tall or greater. Abraham Lincoln was the loftiest at 6 feet 4 inches, followed by Lyndon Baines Johnson, Bill Clinton and Thomas Jefferson. While tall in his own right, George Washington at 6 feet 2 inches only measures up to being seventh tallest in history. The shortest was James Madison at 5 feet 4 inches.
