Household Chores for Kids

  • Kitchen Duty

    • Children are naturally drawn to the kitchen and take interest in cooking at a young age. Parents use this to their advantage, teaching children the basics of kitchen measuring and the responsibility of setting and clearing the table for meals. As children get older, they take on more responsibilities, such as loading the dishwasher and putting dishes away. Other kitchen chores include washing fruits and vegetables, putting away groceries and packing lunches.

    Laundry

    • Kids are able to help parents with laundry at a young age. Putting clothes in the hamper and unloading the dryer are simple ways to instill a light chore responsibility. As children get older, they take on more responsibilities and are taught to match socks, fold clothes and put them away. Eventually they learn how to start a load of laundry.

    Outdoor Chores

    • Outdoor chores such as raking leaves, cutting the grass, watering plants and taking the family dog out for a walk are household chores. When siblings and parents help, these tasks feel more like a family activity than an individual responsibility and is a great way to motivate your child into helping with housework.
