How do I Use Two RJ45s in One Computer?

An RJ45 cable is the type of cable that is used for Ethernet connections between a computer and a router or some kind of broadband modem or other network device. To use two RJ45 cables in a computer, you will need two network cards. For most people, adding a second network card will not make a big difference, but in some cases there may be a need to connect to two different pieces of network equipment or networks.

Install two network adapters. Most computers already have one network adapter, but you will need a second one. Purchase and install a second adapter. Open the computer case and find an open card slot. Put the network card in an open slot and screw it into place. Close the computer and restart. When Windows finds the adapter, insert the driver CD in the computer and browse to the driver and select it.

Connect an RJ45 network cable to each network adapter. Connect the other end of each cable to the network device or network.

Set up your network connection for its intended purpose. If you connect one cable to a router for Internet use, you may need to enter the Internet username and password into your router via a web page. Another example might be to connect the network cable to a printer, and you will then need to install the printer.
