How Long Is a Triathalon?

A triathlon is a multiple discipline endurance sport, which began in 1974. A standard triathlon consists of a swim, a cycle ride and a run, which are completed in one continuous race. Triathlons can vary in length and some allow each stage to be completed by a different competitor.
  • Beginners

    • For novices, it may be possible to compete in short races. These are especially formulated for newcomers to the sport. A typical short race may have a 400 meter swim, followed by a 10 kilometer cycle stage, finishing with a 2.5 kilometer run.

    Intermediate

    • For those with more experience, a standard triathlon length may be more suitable. A standard distance may include a 1,500 meter swim, followed by a 40 kilometer bike phase, concluded with a 10 kilometer run.

    Advanced

    • There is also the option of the Ironman distance, which is generally suitable for elite athletes. This may consist of a 3.8 kilometer swim, a 180 kilometer cycle stage, followed by a 42 kilometer run.

    Considerations

    • Triathlons vary in length, depending on the event. It is always advisable to check with the race organizers the length of the race, if at all unsure.
