Most U.S. states match the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, although several states pay more, according to July 2010 data from the U.S. Department of Labor. As of May 2008, the median hourly pay for retail salespeople was $9.86 an hour, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, with people in general merchandise, clothing and department stores earning around $9 an hour.
