How to Burn a DVD Video From a Handycam

Once you have recorded that special family event or party on your Sony Handycam video camera, you may wish to preserve the memories on a format playable on your television. It's a simple matter to transfer the images from your video camera onto a DVD with the use of a DVD recorder. An ordinary DVD player won't work because it doesn't have a laser burner. So make sure you have a DVD recorder.

Insert the cable end into the output jack on your Handycam. Your camera will come with all the cables you require. Use the cable with an end for the Handycam and an end for external devices. The correct cable has a three-color pronged end for plugging into televisions directly, or in this case, a DVD burner.

Plug the three-pronged, color-coded end into your DVD recorder. Most recorders will have an additional input source on the front of the DVD recorder just for the ease of plugging in other devices, like cameras. These jacks may be hidden under a flip panel on the front. Plug them in according to the colors, matching yellow to yellow, white to white and red to red.

Turn on the television and camera. Use whatever setting you normally use on your television to watch a DVD as you want to see what the DVD recorder is seeing.

    • 4

Set your Handycam recording to the start of what you want to copy. Load a blank, burnable DVD into the DVD recorder.

Press "Record" on your DVD recorder and press "Play" on your Handycam. As the camera plays, the images fed into the DVD recorder will be burned on the DVD. When the camera images are transferred, press "Stop" on the camera and "Stop" on the recorder. Finish with the DVD as you would normally. Either add another chapter and record more or finalize the disc.
