How to Cancel Chkdsk on a Slave Drive

When a hard drive becomes corrupted, the Chkdsk utility performs a maintenance inspection during computer start-up. This typically consists of fixing potentially corrupted data and recovering bad hard drive sectors. Despite being a helpful procedure, it may often take a while to finish its task, depending on the slave drive's capacity and overall damage. To cancel Chkdsk on a slave drive, its set schedule must be canceled using the Windows Registry Editor applet.

Go to "Start" and type "Regedit" from the "Search" field. Press "OK" to launch the Windows Registry Editor.

    • 2

Go to the following directory structure: "Hkey_Local_Machine\ \System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager."

    • 3

Double-click the "BootExecute" entry to edit its attributes. Within the "Value Data" field, remove any command written after the "Autocheck Autochk *" entry. For example, if Chkdsk is set to inspect the "D:\" slave drive, remove all data written after said entry. This will effectively cancel Chkdsk from performing its task on any given hard disk.
